University of Athens

The First Department of Surgery of UOAMS is  a comprehensive unit with main divisions that of General and Vascular   Surgery. It offers a full residency program in these two specialties.

The Department is on call for the Athens Great Metropolitan Area, every 8 days and more than 15 cases are admitted one each call.

General Surgery

The residency program has 18 positions for general surgery residency and according to Greek laws and regulations the program trains its residents for 6 years in all aspects of G. Surgery. The First Department of Surgery it is a unit that covers all aspects of G. Surgery (see divisions) and the residents have the opportunity to get training also in ICU (6 months), Transplantation (12 months), Endoscopy and Vascular Surgery. In our program  we follow some aspects of the USA system including the unofficial (yet in Greece) position of the Chief Resident

Vascular Surgery

The Vascular Surgery program has 2 positions for vascular surgery residency (3 years GS and 4 years VS). Residents of vascular surgery have the great opportunity to get training in all fields of VS in the Department where the Greek Vascular Surgery era began under the former head of the department Prof. P. Balas. Today the Department has one of the biggest world series in AAA and Ruptured AAA and in carotid artery diseases as well as the infragroin by-passes. The head of the Department Prof. E. Bastounis is a General and Vascular Surgeon and runs the Vascular division. We hope that endovascular training is going to be offered to our residents.

Our educational program is very comprehensive and is getting better every year. All  of our efforts are added to improve it because we would like to attract most of the best young physicians of the country, who want to become surgeons. This, will become a necessity for every program, especially in the near future when the residency system change.
The program offers a lot of opportunities for research and postgraduate doctoral thesis and  we strongly encourage postgraduate training abroad. Please see some of our former residents and find out about us.
